Our Heritage
Founded in 1855 by Samuel Golding
In 1856, Samuel Golding started his own business called Cheapside Store located in Wellington Street. The business sold ready-made working class clothing, such as boiler suits, at this time a new fashion concept.
The Cheapside Store was so successful that in 1863, Samuel Golding purchased the site of King Charles II's Palace. The new establishment was named Palace Shop, a name which rapidly because a household word wherever horseracing is known.
The business has been passed down a few generations and then in 1998, Peter Golding who was now the sole shareholder and had no family wishing to enter the business, decided to sell the company to W.D. Coe of Ipswich.
Although now not owned by the Golding family, it remains essentially a family run business, and is continuing to build on the Golding history.
